It’s funny the way that one’s journey to parenthood often seems to best prepare us for our journey as parents.

Whether we become parents through surrogacy and egg donation, adoption, or giving birth ourselves, there are many lessons along the way. One of the greatest lessons becoming a parent teaches us (regardless of the path to parenthood we take) is patience.

Patience is probably the most important skill and virtue that a parent can have. Children will test our patience time and again, and our ability to be patient with them will impact them for their lives.

In surrogacy, patience is often worn thin before the journey even begins. Many of the families and people we work with have almost lost hope by the time they have decided to pursue surrogacy as an option to become parents. You may have had a long fertility journey up until this point, or spent your life searching for the right person only to find yourself pursuing parenthood on your own. You may have had a hard time deciding if you ever wanted to become a parent and are now nervous that you are short on time. The process of surrogacy may try your patience further.

For some, surrogacy is a quick process. If you already have an embryo ready for transfer, you’re ahead of the game. Once you have a surrogate, all of the legal aspects can be put into place and you may very well be expecting a child in a matter of weeks.

Others have a longer path to travel. There are many tiny steps along the way, including finding the best Egg Donor and Surrogate for you, coming to a happy legal agreement with your Egg Donor or your Surrogate, choosing a fertility clinic, and more. Decisions along the way can hold things up and for some, it takes longer to find the right Egg Donor or the perfect Surrogate. The first few embryo transfers are not always successful, prolonging the surrogacy process.

For some, it will take many months before their surrogacy journey is on a solid path. It can be very frustrating, especially if you have already undergone fertility treatments.

Please know that Proud Fertility is with you every step of the way. We know first hand how difficult it can be when things are not happening as quickly as you would like them to. We’ve been there, too.

Remember, it’s not a race. You’re preparing for the most patience-trying adventure of your life, parenting.
