What is the Harmony Test?

Harmony is a relatively new prenatal test that can test for chromosomal abnormalities as early as 10 weeks gestation – about 8 weeks post embryo transfer.

The Harmony Test is performed by extracting fetal DNA from the Surrogate Mother’s (or pregnant person’s) blood. The test detects Trisomy 21 (Down’s Syndrome), Trisomy 18, and Trisomy 13 with 99% accuracy. There is a very low false positive rate. The test is able to detect fetal sex, and screens for sex chromosome conditions and chromosomal deletion, too.

Other methods of screening for chromosomal abnormalities must be done later in pregnancy and some carry a significant risk of miscarriage. The Harmony Test allows you to get the information you need without putting your Surrogate or fetus at risk.

What’s the risk for my Surrogate and Baby?

Harmony Testing is suitable for all pregnant people and all risk levels.

Harmony also carries almost no risk to your Surrogate or your baby. It’s a simple process of drawing blood.

The Process of Taking the Harmony Test

It’s all very simple (on your end)! The Surrogate or pregnant person visits a lab to have blood drawn. The blood sample is analyzed using advanced technology. Results are usually delivered within 7 business days!

Is the Harmony Test Right for You?

All prenatal testing should be discussed with your primary care provider (doctor, obstetrician, midwife). The Harmony Test is best for families who:

• Want the option to terminate a pregnancy as early as possible if a chromosomal abnormality is found.
• Would like as much time as possible to plan for parenting a child with a chromosomal abnormality.
• Are anxious about the baby’s health.

Because the Harmony Test is not covered by provincial health insurance plans, it can be cost prohibitive for some families. Talk to your doctor or midwife about what your screening options are.
