Gay Surrogacy
Through surrogacy, gay men can become fathers sooner than if they choose adoption. Surrogacy also makes it possible for gay men to have a child that is genetically linked to them or their partner. We help future dads like you fulfill family dreams. ConnectSurrogacy for Gay Men

What is surrogacy for gay men?
Surrogacy is a legal arrangement between a gay couple or single man and a woman who will become pregnant with their child. When the baby is born she relinquishes her legal and maternal ties to the baby. In order for a pregnancy to occur, in vitro fertilization (IVF) is performed to transfer an embryo to the Surrogate’s uterus or intrauterine insemination (IUI) is used.
As a gay man, surrogacy may be the only opportunity you have to parent a child that is biologically connected to you or your partner.
Two Types of Surrogacy for Gay Men
Gestational Surrogacy
Gestational surrogacy is when the surrogate is not biologically connected to the baby she carries. A donor egg can be fertilized by the father’s sperm and the resulting embryo is placed in the Surrogate’s uterus. Gestational surrogacy is the preferred type of surrogacy for most gay men and the only type of surrogacy Proud Fertility is able to support.
Traditional Surrogacy
Traditional surrogacy is the process of having the Surrogate Mother’s egg fertilized by the father’s sperm (or sperm from a donor) using IUI. The Surrogate is the biological mother of the baby but relinquishes her parental rights when the baby is born. Traditional surrogacy can have unintended emotional and legal consequences for everyone involved and is generally only used if the father wants the surrogate to be actively involved in the child’s life.
Traditional surrogacy usually costs less than gestational surrogacy. Success rates for both types of surrogacy will depend on many factors. You should talk to your preferred fertility clinic for more information.
At Proud Fertility, we work with gay men who are choosing to pursue gestational surrogacy. We would love to talk with you about your options regardless of whether you prefer traditional surrogacy or gestational surrogacy. Reach out to us through our Intended Parent Interest Form and we can arrange to answer your questions.
Why choose altruistic surrogacy in Canada?
Altruistic surrogacy is the only type of surrogacy that is legal in Canada. The Surrogate is not paid for the pregnancy but her surrogacy related expenses can be reimbursed. Altruistic surrogacy ensures your Surrogate is committed to carrying your child for the right reasons and isn’t just “in it for the money.” Altruistic surrogacy also protects women from being exploited for their reproductive abilities. Canada’s altruistic surrogacy laws draw only the most committed and kind-hearted Surrogates.
Commercial surrogacy is illegal in Canada. In a commercial surrogacy arrangement, the Surrogate is provided with a base fee for the pregnancy.
Financially, altruistic surrogacy is a much more attractive option for gay men than commercial surrogacy. You are only responsible for the Surrogates medical and out-of-pocket expenses as they relate to her pregnancy and will not pay your surrogate a base fee for her pregnancy. You may be financially responsible for medical expenses such as fertility clinic fees, and medications, attorney fees, counseling expenses, and other pregnancy-related needs like maternity clothing and travel expenses.
Surrogacy is an incredible experience for both the Surrogate and the Future Parents. Altruistic surrogacy is a very real example of the good in the world. Altruistic Surrogates may choose to help others have children because they want to give back, enjoy pregnancy, love giving birth, and want to do something special for someone else.

Frequently Asked Questions About Gay Surrogacy
Is surrogacy legal for gay men in Canada?
Canada is an amazing country. Beautiful, peaceful, and not as cold as you’d think! In Canada, everyone is equal, and being gay will not interfere with your ability to become a parent through surrogacy.
Will it be more difficult to find a Surrogate because I am gay?
Our Surrogates are excited to help you build your family regardless of your sexuality, gender, or relationship status.
Can I become a dad through surrogacy if I am single?
We help single gay men, gay men in long-term relationships, and married gay men become fathers through surrogacy in Canada.
I already have an Egg Donor or embryos created, can Proud Fertility still help me with surrogacy?
Yes, we can help you with your surrogacy experience if you have already chosen an Egg Donor or have embryos. If you do not have an Egg Donor or embryos, we can help you with that, too!
Can I become a parent through surrogacy if I am HIV positive?
We educate the Surrogates and Egg Donors we work with about HIV to reassure them that they will be safe throughout the surrogacy process. Fertility clinics have special procedures to reduce the risk of HIV transmission from you to the Surrogate.
We also make it a priority to ensure Surrogates and Egg Donors understand that HIV is treatable. We know that it is important for everyone to understand that a long and healthy life is possible with proper care. Your HIV status does not interfere with your ability to be a wonderful parent.
Why is known egg donation preferable to anonymous egg donation?
Traditionally, gay men who wanted to get help from an egg donor are shown a database of numerous anonymous egg donors. They choose based on photo and stats listed in the database.
We balk at tradition by being the first surrogacy agency to encourage known egg donation.
Through the known egg donation process you have the opportunity to meet your egg donor. Known egg donation means the data you’re given about your Egg Donor is confirmable. You have the opportunity to learn more about the person who your child will be biologically connected to. In addition, you can choose to have as much or as little ongoing communication as you would like. This means you can choose to be updated if your Egg Donor learns of any genetic health concerns and medical history.
